The Indianapolis Colts have had their fair share of contract holdout dramas in recent years, but one player who is making it clear he won’t add to that list is veteran linebacker E.J. Speed.

Despite looming contract negotiations, Speed’s focus remains firmly on the field, a reassuring stance for Colts fans and management alike.

James Boyd of The Athletic hinted at Speed’s steadfast commitment to the team in a recent tweet, suggesting that contract talks aren’t overshadowing his offseason preparations.

This dedication comes as no surprise, especially considering Speed’s outstanding performance during the 2023 season.

Last year proved to be a turning point for the 28-year-old linebacker, as he notched career-high numbers across the board. With 11 starts under his belt, Speed emerged as a key contributor on defense, a significant leap from his limited role in previous seasons.

Statistically, Speed’s impact was undeniable. He racked up an impressive 102 combined tackles, with 78 of those being solo efforts. To put it into perspective, his total tackles from the 2023 season eclipsed his cumulative tally from his first four years in the NFL.

But Speed’s influence extended beyond mere tackles. His disruptive presence on the field resulted in 12 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles, and four pass defenses, showcasing his versatility and playmaking ability. Such contributions not only bolstered the Colts’ defense but also elevated Speed’s value in the eyes of potential suitors.

As the 2024 season approaches, Speed finds himself at a pivotal juncture in his career. With a base salary of $3.5 million for the upcoming season, the linebacker stands to earn a significant pay raise if he maintains his 2023 form. However, the specter of unrestricted free agency looms large unless a contract extension is inked before March 2025.

Speed’s rise to prominence hasn’t gone unnoticed within the Colts organization. His breakout campaign saw him replace former star inside linebacker Shaquille Leonard, who was released by the team in November.

The decision to part ways with Leonard speaks volumes about the confidence the Colts have in Speed’s ability to anchor their defense for years to come.

Looking ahead, Speed’s future with the Colts appears promising. With his contract situation temporarily on the back burner, he has the opportunity to further solidify his status as a cornerstone of the team’s defense. Whether it’s through continued stellar performances on the field or fruitful negotiations off it, E.J. Speed is poised to leave an indelible mark on the Indianapolis Colts franchise.
