Mat Ishbia Stays Positive, Commits to Building on Current Team
Patrick Breen/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK

Suns owner Mat Ishbia spoke to the media for 45 minutes on Wednesday, a few days following Phoenix’s four-game playoff sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Throughout the press conference, he maintained a positive outlook on the Suns’ future. Without divulging specific offseason plans, including the status of head coach Frank Vogel, Ishbia emphasized his commitment to building on the current foundation rather than starting from scratch.

After dismissing the narrative that the house is burning in Phoenix, Ishbia noted that he firmly believes the Suns were a better team this season than they were last.

Which, to his point, is not the wildest claim to make considering the Suns did improve their year-over-year regular season record. The only difference was their 1st round elimination in 2024 rather than 2nd round elimination in 2023.

Ishbia stated, “Will we be better next year than we were this year? Yes. Are we better this year than we were last year? Absolutely. Think about the team that lost in Denver. Is our team better this year than last year? It’s not even close. But… NBA championship, that’s what we’re focused on.”

He also made sure to point out that just because a championship was not won, does not mean everything needs to be blown up. Ishbia still firmly believes the starting five that Phoenix holds is good enough to win them a championship.

His optimism didn’t stop there; Ishbia claimed that 26 other general managers “would trade their whole team for our team,” highlighting his confidence in the Suns’ current lineup.

Regarding the future of Frank Vogel, Ishbia mentioned that discussions had not yet taken place, a stance that also applies to general manager James Jones and any players who might be considered for trades.

Ishbia noted that these discussions would occur in the coming days.
